Laos
Laos is an enigmatic backwater slowly waking up to the world. The petite capital Vientiane is a place of historic temples, while Luang Prabang is a slice of Lao history with temples, shrines and palaces lining its slow-paced streets. Elsewhere in Laos is the puzzling Plain of Jars and the sleepy Mekong islands of Si Phan Don, ensuring an enchanting time. A visit to Laos is a visit to another world, an older Asia and will enlighten your senses every step of the way.

Luang Prabang
View Map
A place where time stands still is one way to describe the charms of this historic capital of ancient wats. Luang Prabang is the most popular destination in Laos, a compact, atmospheric town that can be enjoyed at leisure on foot. Now a UNESCO World Heritage site, there are more than 30 historic temples hidden among the streets of town, as well as the Royal Palace Museum. Luang Prabang is now plugged into Laos and the rest of the region, with a new highway connecting it to the capital of Vientiane to the south and international flight links to nearby Chang Mai in Thailand and Danang in Vietnam. Combining this atmospheric place with the highlights of Indochina such as Hoi An in Vietnam and Angkor in Cambodia has never been easier.
Pakse
View Map
Pakse is another bustling city and gateway to the attractions of southern Laos. There are good road links from Pakse west to the Thai border and south to the Cambodian border, making it a principal town on the tourist trail of ancient Khmer temples in Laos, Thailand and Cambodia.
Southern Laos
View Map
Southern Laos is the most traditionally Lao region of the country and is beginning to take off as a tourist destination, especially with the opening of the Lao-Cambodian border on the Mekong, making overland Indochina trips an enticing possibility. Some of the highlights of the region include the stunning Khmer temple of Wat Phu, the natural attractions of the Bolaven Plateau and scenes of tranquil Mekong life around Si Phan Don (Four Thousand Islands).
Vientiane
View Map
Vientiane is the petite and charming capital of Laos, more a town than a city and a very small town at that. Located on the banks of the Mekong, Vientane has been the centre of political life in Laos since the 16th century. With its gentle, almost sleepy pace, and low-key attractions, it remains an easy-going introduction to the country. The most important sights in Vientiane are its historic temples.
